Garbolino Club Angler of the Year - Lindholme Lakes - Wednesday 22nd April 2015

Due to winning the Robin Hood AC points last year, I was put forward to fish the Garbolino Club Angler of the Year qualifier at Lindholme Lakes, Epworth.

I arrived in good time and found out that all lakes were in apart from Benny's.  Pre-draw I wanted to ideally draw a peg that I could reach the island with 16m pole (max) or some open water for fishing shallow, I didn't want to be on Beeches (as I have never faired very well on there), nor did I want to be on Loco (as I had only fished it once on a Fisho qualifier years ago and again, didn't do very well - general theme for my matches).

By the time of the draw, there were about 140 anglers present.  I was near the front of the draw queue and put my hand in the lucky bag and out came Loco peg 25.  Eeeewww.

I looked on the peg board and saw that I had an empty peg to my left (peg 26) and for some reason had peg 23 in my mind.  I went to my peg and had a quick chat with Tim Moran who advised me to fish pellet wag at 25yards feeding and fishing 6mm pellets, whilst feeding 4mm pellets at 14m or so with the intention of catching shallow - there are loads of 2lb+ F1's plus some big munter carp to be had.  My peg had a nice looking reed bed to my right, which I was almost sitting on.  I had Phil Limbert (not Lambert as named in Match Fishing Magazine) for company on peg 21.

After about 20 mins of setting up, Gary Matthews appeared and said 'Mick, you are on my peg'.  I said 'No, I am not'.  A quick call to Neil 'Uncle Fester' Grantham confirmed that I was.... on the wrong peg.  I was on peg 25, not 23.  Damn, lost my nice looking reed bed. Don't know why I thought that I was on peg 23.

Gary helped me move my gear to my new peg and I continued setting up.

I set up a pellet waggler rod and 3 shallow kits and 1 margin rig as follows:

2 x Jigga rigs - one to fish between 8" - 18" deep and the other to fish as deep as 3ft.
1 x Drennan Crystal shallow rig to fish about 2ft deep.
All hooklengths were .13 Preston Powerline to a size 16 C1 hook.

My margin rig was a Cralusso inline float on .17 Preston Powerline direct to a size 14 Colmic B501.

For bait, I had a couple of tins of corn and 1 bag of micro pellets and 2 bags each of 4mm and 6mm pellets.

That was it, time to start.

I pinged a few pellets out on the pellet waggler line and cast out over the top and worked on this line for the next 20-25 minutes and never had a liner or an indication or anything.  All the while, I was feeding the pole line.  I decided to have a look on that line instead.

I baited up the jigga rig and lowered the rig in and catapulted some pellets over the top, a couple of slaps with the rig and oooosh, I was in.  My first fish - an F1 about 6oz.  I repeated the process and caught another fish of the same stamp.  I wondered if I could catch them closer....???

I fed at 13m and dropped the rig in, a couple of minutes later, I was in again.  I wondered if I could catch them closer...., so chucked some pellets in about 5/6m out and lowered the rig in on that line, nothing, so I went back out to 13m whilst still feeding 5/6m line.

After every fish at 13m, I would drop the rig on the 5/6m line whilst shipping back out.  On my 4th time at dropping in, oooooosssshhh, I was in at 5/6m.

I fished this line for the duration of the match, having a peg to peg battle with Steve Riley who was to my left hand side on peg 27.

At one point, I hooked a zoo creature that took off up the lake, taking my top kit with it....Crap!!!!  The section must have worked loose whilst slapping??!!

Both Gary and Phil were struggling to catch.  Gary was even fishing in my reed bed LOL.

At the all out, Steve Riley came to have a chat and we both said that we had beaten each other, he said to me that at one point I was catching 5 fish to his one and vice versa.  It was going to be close to call between us both.  I estimated that I had about 200 fish for about 90 - 100lb ish.  Pure estimation.

By the time that the scales arrived, Gavin Maguire was winning it with 124lb 8oz from Oasis peg 53with a couple of other 100lb back ups.  I didn't have that.

I lifted my first net out which weighed about 60lb total. I lifted my 2nd net out (which had a similar weight) for 65lb for a total weight of 125lb 6oz.  I was the new leader.  Now it was the turn of Steve on peg 27, he had a few weighs and his fish totalled 100lb 6oz.  I was the new leader.  I was told to stay at my peg with half of my catch for a catch photo should I actually win the qualifier.

I waited for what seemed like hours, but was probably about 30 mins when Alex Bones came to me to tell me that I had won and he wanted a catch photo.

I was made up.  I thoroughly enjoyed my days fishing.

Now to start planning for Barston.

Tightlines.

Match 30 - Final Club Match of the Season - Stock Pond, Sykehouse Lakes

Sunday 26th October 2014

This was the final match  of our 30 match series and the Individual Knockout, Individual Club Champion points and the Club Team weights would all be finalised during this match.  I was leading the individual points with Dave Webster and Stuart Wilson hanging onto my coat tails and my team were about 25lb in front on the team weights front, just leading Dave Horsfall and his band of merry men.  Stuart Wilson and Big Macca were battling it out for the Individual Knockout trophy.  Stuart was carrying about a 50lb weight advantage going into today's knockout match.  Macca was up against it today.

I had fished this lake once before and drew peg 15 on the top bank, opposite where you come in and all the weights came from the pegs in the 20's.

There was a very very strong wind blowing from about peg 5/6 diagonally across the lake to about peg 20.  Pegs 3 - 6/7 had the wind more or less off the back and peg 20 - 23 had the wind in their faces, for everyone else, it was a nasty side on wind.

I put my hand in the lucky bag and drew peg 17, a couple of pegs away from where I was last time.  I arrived at my peg to find that I had peg 16 empty, team member Craig McKenny was on peg 15 and I had Mark 'The Bomb' Wright next to me (Again!!) on peg 18.  Eric drew peg 23 (ish), Andy Limp-Biscuit drew peg 6.

I set up a pellet waggler rig, a bomb rig and two short line pole rigs to fish in about 7ft of water (top 5) and one margin rig to fish in about 4ft of water.  Stuart Wilson drew peg 13 round to my left and Dave Webster drew peg 26 ish.

The match got under way and I could see the odd fish topping at about 30 yards +, so cast out with the pellet waggler set at 5ft deep. The float settled, then started going sideways - due to the wind...time to re-cast me thinks.  I cast out again, the float shot under and I was in.  A carp about 3lb was soon in the keepnet.  The Bomb at the side of me started to get one or two fish on bomb and pellet.  I could not get any more bites.  Andy Limp-Biscuit and Paul 'Castaway' Wilson who were both more or less opposite me, were both catching fish on the pellet waggler, due to seeing them catching this way, I persevered with the pellet waggler, but could not get any bites.

I had one carp and The Bomb had about 7 or 8 carp.  I was getting battered off the next peg.

I decided to cast out my bomb rig - nothing, not even a liner.  I could not get a bite.

We were halfway into the match and I only had 1 carp in the net.  I could see Stuart Wilson catching on peg 13, The Bomb was still getting the odd fish, Castaway and Limp-Biscuit were still getting the odd fish on pellet waggler.

I persevered on the bomb a bit longer, but to no avail.  We were now into the last 90 minutes of the match and I decided to have a look on the top 5 rig.  I lowered in a 6mm expander, the float settled, shot under and skimmer about 4oz was soon in the net.  I dropped in again, and a roach about the same size was also soon in the net.  I was going nowhere.  I changed over to a hard 8mm banded pellet and lowered that in and started to flick a few 8mm pellets over the top.

I waited about 5-10 minutes and the float shot under and about 10ft of elastic came out of the pole tip, this was no skimmer.  After a brief tussle, carp number 2 was soon in the net, this one was about 5/6lb.  I stayed on this line for the duration of the match, catching carp quite regular.  That was it match over.

I could see that I had been beaten by The Bomb, Stuart Wilson, Castaway Wilson and Limp-Biscuit at least.  I was not sure who else had beaten me.

The scales arrived at my peg and Castaway was leading with 101lb, Stuart Wilson had 95lb, Limp-Biscuit had 80lb, now it was my turn.  I was very surprised when the scales went round and settled at 51lb.  The Bomb on the next peg had battered me and put 76lb on the scales.  Webster had struggled and managed to put 15lb on the scales.

Full Result:
1.  Paul Wilson (Peg 4) - 101lb 4oz
2.  Stuart Wilson (Peg 13) - 95lb 4oz
3.  Andy Limbert (Peg 6) - 80lb
4.  Mark Wright (Peg 18) - 76lb 2oz

I had come 6th as I had also been beaten by Frank Brook.

Given that Stuart Wilson had weighed in 95lb and come 2nd, that confirmed his position as ROBIN HOOD AC KNOCKOUT CHAMPION 2014.

My result today confirmed that I was ROBIN HOOD AC CLUB CHAMPION for 2014 amassing 214 points.  Stuart Wilson was 2nd  with 194pts and Dave Webster was 3rd with 190pts.

On the team front, we had managed to maintain our weight advantage and added to it to also be ROBIN HOOD AC TEAM CHAMPIONS for 2014.  Over the 30 match series, my team consisting of Andy Limbert, Eric White, Craig McKenny, Charlie Colefax and myself had a team total weight of 4500lb 11oz.  2nd place team was Dave Horsfall, Ian Waddell, Alan Hunter and Stuart Wilson who had managed to catch a combined total of 4447lb 13oz.

Well done everyone.

Tightlines over winter, I will post updates of how I get on.
